How to Stay Secure While Rock Climbing in Mexico

Are you about to go on a rock climbing adventure in Mexico? The country as a whole is a paradise for climbers. But like any outdoor sport, rock climbing comes with risks. That does not mean you should not climb. It just means you need to be prepared. So, how can you make sure you stay sesure while climbing in Mexico? Let’s talk about it.

6 Ways to be Secure During Rock Climbing

1. Always Check Your Gear

We know that this is obvious, but many accidents happen because of poorly maintained gear. Before you start your climb, double-check everything. Is your harness worn? Is your rope center properly marked?? Are your cams and carabiners in good shape? It’s always better to be overly cautious with your equipment.

●     Inspect your harness for wear and tear.

●     Ensure ropes are in good condition and free of any obvious damage.

●     Double-check all knots, buckles, and carabiners.

●     Make sure your belay device works smoothly and isn’t worrn.

2. Know the Weather Before You Go

Mexico’s weather can change quickly, especially in certain climbing regions. Moreover, don’t just rely on how things look in the morning; check the forecast before you head out. If there’s a chance of rain or strong winds, it might be best to climb single pitch routes vs long routes.

Why is this important? Wet rocks can slow your progress, making it harder to finish the route or get back to the ground. Similarly, sudden wind gusts can also blow and tangle your ropes on rappel, causing extended descents.

A quick weather check can make all the difference. If conditions look sketchy, don’t risk it. The route will still be there tomorrow!

3. Know Your Limits

Climbing long routes isn’t about pushing yourself to the edge of your capabilities, especially if you’re not fully prepared. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but knowing your limits will help keep you secure. Are you ready for a long challenging route that might be impossible to complete? Or should you stick to something within your comfort zone for now?

Some climbers think they need to tackle the toughest routes to prove themselves. But pushing yourself too far, too fast, can lead to mistakes. Take your time, build your skills, and work your way up to more challenging climbs.

4. Climb With Experienced Partners or use a Guide

●     Information on which routes are suitable for the climber’s competency

●     An additional point of view to identify possible risks

●     Regional knowledge of climbing in various weather

5. Belay Expertly

Climbing is all about trust. The person who is belaying you is holding your life in his/her hands. Hence, it is important to ensure they know what they are doing.

●     You should talk with your climbing partner before starting the climb to avoid any misunderstandings. Are you rappelling or lowering?

●     Make sure you have checked each other’s knots.

●     Communicating during the climb is important. Specific language, not verbal spatter
